  • 25. Water-Resistant Shoe Bag

    Water-Resistant Shoe Bag

Frankly, the streets of India are not the cleanest. That’s why I’d absolutely store my shoes in this water-resistant shoe bag. I wish I had had this on my last trip to India because the last thing you want is for your nice clothes to intermingle with street grime, mud, sand, and germs. These are so luxurious for a non-luxury price tag and really make all the difference in a fresh suitcase when you return home.

  • 27. Mosquito Wristbands

They’re reusable and somewhat waterproof, we find it way easier than respraying DEET and harmful chemicals all day.

What to Wear in New Delhi

What you wear in New Delhi can be completely based on the weather, however, is it always best to keep yourself more covered and be a bit more conservative. While the hot Indian sun beats down on you, it’s best to try and wear clothes that cover your shoulders and go past your knees, especially if you intend to enter religious or cultural sites.

While you might want to break out those summer shorts, I highly suggest bringing more breathable options like linen pants or relaxed pants to combat the heat. A shawl or scarf are always great options to cover yourself or find relief from the sun. Be prepared for cooler nights with a light jacket and always wear comfortable shoes!

What should WOMEN wear in New Delhi? – (Click to expand)

Below is a sample women’s clothing list. (All items link to Amazon.com for your convenience).

As a woman in New Delhi, day-to-day dressing can be quite casual. In the warmer months linen pants, a cotton t-shirt with Birkenstocks, and a cute crochet handbag are perfect for strolling the streets and shopping in bazaars. However, even on those casual, hot days, it’s important to stay covered for cultural reasons. If you’re visiting any place of worship or a cultural site, please throw on a scarf or shawl to show more respect.

At night, it’s time to let loose and throw on a maxi dress or floaty skirt with a nice blouse, for a lovely dinner out in the town. Always be prepared for cooler evenings and don’t feel silly walking around with a scarf or light jacket to keep warm when the sun goes down. No matter what you wear just be sure to wear comfortable shoes, have a handbag that can be properly closed, and cover your shoulders and knees!

What should MEN wear in New Delhi? – (Click to expand)

Below is a sample men’s clothing list. (All items link to Amazon.com for your convenience).

Men can dress a bit more casually while in India and it’s not as strict with their requirements. However, the weather still isn’t on their side, and during those warm months, breathable clothing such as shorts and t-shirts are sometimes the best options. Elevate your casual daytime look for evenings with a nice pair of sneakers and shacket to really impress.
From classics like polo shirts and hoodies, to linen pants or hiking pants, men have the luxury of having a bit more fun while in New Delhi. Western dressing is totally acceptable and relaxed fits are better, especially when it comes to weather conditions and activities.

Dressing for the Seasons

  • Winter - December, January, February, March

While this is coolest time of the year to visit, it’s also the most comfortable. The days can reach upwards of 70˚F but can go low into the 40˚F’s. This is when its best to bring layers so you can easily adjust to the weather changes. Nights will be cooler, so light jackets will be key with hoodies or sweatshirts.

  • Summer - April, May, June

Be prepared to drink lots of water as this heat is intense. With temperatures ranging between 80˚F and 100˚F, these are the hottest months to visit New Delhi and can be quite dangerous. With sunstroke and dehydration affecting many travelers, it’s best to pack light and breathable clothing that can keep you cool but also protect you from the sun. Please remember your sun hats!

  • Monsoon - July, August, September

You guessed it, monsoon season can not only be very wet, but very hot too. Temperatures will range between 80°F to 94°F and whilst that is hot, it’s the humidity that will get you. If you visit during this season, bring lots of rain gear, especially an umbrella and rain jacket.

  • Fall - October, November

This shorter season offers a bit of relief after the hot and humid months where the daily averages range between 60˚F and 90˚F. The days have a cool breeze to them, and this is where layering is again important. You will want a light jacket for evenings and during the day breathable or cool clothing pieces.

Dressing Appropriately for the Activity – (Click to expand)

City Wear - If you plan on wandering through New Delhi tasting delicious foods or having a shop and barter, feel free to wear relaxed fitting clothes that are both breathable and light. Normal day to day activity is quite low key and you can get away wearing practical anything if it's appropriate.

Religious and Cultural Sites - Always bring a shawl or scarf when visiting important cultural or religious sites. Out of respect towards Indian culture it is imperative to wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees and show off nothing.

Evenings - Get a little dressed up and let your hair down for a night in New Delhi! While it’s important to still dress conservatively, feel free to wear dresses and nice button downs for dinners. Bring a light jacket or shawl to throw over your shoulders in case you get chilly.

What NOT to Bring

  • 1. DON'T BRING Valuable Electronics

While you might be tempted to bring your top tier electronics, don’t. Lots of electronics can weigh you down and you might lose them, or they might get stolen. Bring only the essentials like a phone, camera and maybe an iPad if necessary.

  • 2. DON'T PACK Expensive Jewelry

While jewelry does make every outfit look better, it’s not worth packing and potentially getting lost or stolen. Expensive jewelry can sometimes make you a target, so it’s better just to leave it at home.

  • 3. DON'T Overpack

It’s tempting to pack loads, especially when coming to New Delhi and the weather can be quite dramatic. However, pack less, if you run out of fresh clothes you can always do laundry.

  • 4. DON'T BRING Books

Books will weigh you down and take up so much precious space in your luggage. If you’re looking to read a little on your trip, bring a kindle instead.

  • 5. DON'T TAKE Too Much Cash

While having cash is always a safe option in New Delhi, there is no need to carry loads of cash with you. With ATMs throughout the city, take what you need for a few days, and you’ll be safe to make all your purchases.

  • 6. DON'T PACK Nice Shoes

Having comfortable shoes is an absolute must while traveling in New Delhi, however you most definitely don’t need to bring your nicest pair.

  • 7. DON'T BRING a Suitcase

After traveling India for months on end, the best way to get your luggage from place to place is by a large traveling backpack. Leave the suitcase at home and grab yourself a proper backpack.

What NOT to Wear – (Click to expand)

Comfort and breathability are definitely key when it comes to New Delhi dressing, however, do not wear anything that is too revealing or risqué. When it comes to dressing up, it’s safe to leave the heels and fancy shoes at home and wear something a bit more practical. While you might want to show off your newest accessories, think about minimal jewelry and being a bit more modest!

  • 3. How to avoid getting sick in New Delhi?

Unfortunately, the way most people get the infamous Delhi Belly is from dirty water or food, so being ultra-careful is best. Be diligent when choosing where to eat and purchasing water. However, taking electrolytes, prebiotics and other natural remedies can help with preventing any sickness.

India has some of the most polluted cities in the world and unfortunately New Delhi is quite bad. While there is nothing you can seriously do to defend yourself from the pollution, here’s one thing to help with the problem. Place a mask or scarf over your face when you walk around outside, this allows you to breathe in less toxins. This is especially important around transportation and busy markets.
